The cheapest camera/camcorder that gets the job done but still looks good: Kodak Zi8. The only other real contender in this category is the infamous Flip UltraHD. While the Flip is certainly a worthy contender, the Kodak has some aspects that make it an obvious choice in our mind.

Kodak Zi8
  1. Doubles as a camera (although the lack of a flash isn’t good)
  2. Has an external microphone jack (i.e. your audio doesn’t have to be bad)
  3. Uses AA batteries so you don’t have to worry about recharging
  4. HDMI output port so you can immediately watch the footage on your big screen

If you’re seriously considering a Flip or Kodak, check out these great reviews on the products from Cnet, Boston.com, and PMerrill.com.

If you’re looking for more specs on the Kodak and flip, check out the specifications from Amazon here and here, respectively.

Use Your Smartphone

Although if you have one of the following smartphones you won’t even need a Zi8 or Flip. We’re not recommending you buy one of these smartphones solely for the camera/camcorder abilities, but if you already own one then save your money by foregoing the Kodak or Flip. A phone is the perfect companion for the REALTOR on the go. Remember, not every phone is going to do the job, so count your Motorola Razr out, but here’s a list of phones that do a remarkable job.

Which do we recommend?

iPhone 4 Real Estate

The iPhone 4. I know a lot of people are going to disagree with us on this one, but the biggest factor in making this decision comes down to what sort of tripods and tripod adapters are available for phones. For REALTORs, taking pictures and shooting video with a phone is optimal because the device is always with them. But if you have to use your hands to make steady shots then forget about it because that won’t happen. Steady photos and video are critical to the REALTOR looking professional and the best way to accomplish that is with a tripod.

Tripod Screws

The Kodak Zi8 and Flip UltraHD both have tripod adapter screws, something the phones don’t have. Due to the iPhone’s popularity there are a number of devices on the market that attach to your iPhone, allowing it to be connected to a tripod. All the other phones don’t have that luxury. While YouTube videos exist showing you how to create your own, that won’t suffice for most users.
